The Gardco Liquid Density/Specific Gravity Meter/Monitor - CPVC Sensor Unit (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride, which is highly resistant to caustic chemicals (including acids) and high temperatures - is the only one of its kind on the market that gives a measure and read-out of liquid density.

The optional 4-20 ma analog output board provides an output signal of 4-20 ma, (through terminals on the back of the meter box) that Process Engineers can use to talk to their controllers. With this output signal, engineers can turn valves on and off to maintain a process target density. The 4-20 ma output can measure, record, monitor and control processes. This output signal is available 24/7 which makes this hydrometer so valuable and unique in the process market.

Unlike ordinary desk top or hand held hydrometers - which are static, passive devices - these electronic hydrometers are very sophisticated instruments which allow for remote (up to 500 feet), deep in-tank convenient automatic monitoring and/or controlling of liquid density/specific gravity during a mixing or blending operation - a time and cost saving device.




  • Measures density in sgu (1 sgu = 1 gm/cc) in overall range of .400 sgu (for example .900 1 1.30 sgu, or .800 - 1.200 sgu, or 1.000 - 1.400 sgu, etc.) with accuracy ± .005 sgu.
  • Can be operated in situ in a process control operation to monitor and record liquid density during a typical blending or mixing process for the chemical, petroleum, electro-polishing, passivation, flux density control or food and beverage industry. As part of a control system, it can be used to control a mix to meet a target density
  • Can be used to determine the concentration mix (by volume or mass) of a blend
  • Can be used as a gauge in storage tanks to determine the interface depth between two immiscible liquids such as oil and water
  • Can be used in a laboratory to monitor and record liquid density during a process controlled temperature or pressure cycle operation

Principle of Operation

The submersible probe head contains a mathematically characterized spring-float system. When the head is immersed vertically in the liquid, the float moves vertically and the position of the float controls the position of a permanent magnet whose displacement is sensed by a concentric array of Hall-effect linear displacement sensors. The output signals of the sensors are mixed in a dedicated electronics module that provides a single output voltage which the magnitude is a direct linear measure of the quantity to be measured.
